<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n121 Cannon Street stands proudly in the historic Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood. Flanked by two pre-Civil War era homes, this structure itself dates back to the late nineteenth century. Despite its history, the property had been significantly altered over time, most notably with a second-story porch enclosure that hid its original charm. And while the two original front second-story windows were covered, they were intact. If you look closely at the before image, you\u2019ll notice even the shutters had shutters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project team graciously re-opened the second-story porch, and the windows and original door opening were restored as part of this project. Four of the eight original wood columns had been removed during the enclosure of the second-story porch. The first-level porch columns had deteriorated beyond repair. To ensure structural integrity and authenticity, the team replaced these columns while replicating the original design. The recreated porch balusters and columns were guided by historic photographs of neighboring homes, preserving the historical context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Decades of modern interventions, including 1970s aluminum siding, obscured the home\u2019s historic character. The siding was carefully removed, revealing the original wood siding beneath. The team meticulously restored or replaced the wood in kind where necessary, ensuring consistency with the original materials. Additionally, all of the exterior windows were preserved and restored. The majority of the siding on the rear was replaced and openings were reconfigured, and the brick flue was removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This incredible revival didn\u2019t stop at major structural changes. The project team paid careful attention to the smallest details. Original hardware on the shutters and the driveway gate were retained and preserved, highlighting the importance of even the tiniest elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project team includes Cobb Architects, Miller Construction, and Armchair Management, LLC. The 121 Cannon Project was the 1500th to be awarded a Carolopolis Award by the Preservation Society of Charleston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3022 NORTH CLIFTON AVE, CHICAGO<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3022 North Clifton was built in 1893 in the north side Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. The exterior of the 3-flat residential building was restored with Victorian details including corbels under its front roof overhang. The front porch was modernized with the installation of a copper roof and gutter, and the front yard landscaping included a slate stone walkway. All concrete walkways were replaced as well as the roof. The incoming electrical service was updated.
